Many of you have emailed and left comments asking how much should you tip the woman who is providing you a massage. The answer is actually more complex than one would imagine. First off, the a tip is a gratuity.

It is 100% discretionary. Most massage girls derive a majority of their take home income off of tips. Sometimes in certain massage parlor arrangements (such as KMPs - Korean Massage Parlors and RMPs Russian Massage Parlors) they have to evenly share their tips with management, the cooks that make them food in the back, the lady that cleans up the sheets.

I think tipping really depends on what part of the country you are in and what you feel like the service level was for the performance you paid for. If you feel like you had a real girlfriend experience, it make sense to tip $30-$40 on top of whatever you paid for the service. Don't be a cheap ass, some of these girls send money back to their families overseas and every dollar counts.

You should always tip your massage therapist in cash--if you do it as a credit card amount, she might not end up seeing it. Make sure that when you go into a massage parlor that you have a good variety of bills. Which means...don't get stuck with having 4 twenty dollar bills. It's just like at the strip club. If you only have $20s, you can only type in increments of $20 ($20, $40, etc.). If you have $5s, $10s ($1s for you cheap asses), you can give them an exact amount based on your perceived value, for example you can tip them $18.88 in a Chinese location.

One final word of advice, these girls talk. So if you plan to go back to the establishment, be weary that if you tipped one girl poorly that the next time you stop by..she might all of a sudden be busy, along with the other prettier ones. You might get stuck with the busted looking one. It's like tipping at a restaurant. If you don't plan to go back, then tip whatever you want. But don't embarrass yourself if you plan to go there again.
